Polar bear maths!

Can you practise all the fabulous learning that you have done in maths this week to come up with a maths game that you could play on this polar bear board?
How would you win?
What maths skills would you use?
How could you make it easier or trickier?

Top secret Arctic diaries

As part of our learning we have started to keep diaries of our Arctic adventures in Year 1. As well as writing about our imaginary expeditions to various Arctic wildernesses we have been recording our thoughts and feelings.

On Monday we are going to copy Horrid Henry and put our top secret diaries in a special lockable box. Then we are going to hide them in a top secret location!

Where would you hide your top secret diary?
(I promise not to have a peek!)

What would you wear to the Arctic?

Today we went on an Arctic adventure of the playground. We took our imaginary binoculars and wore our imaginary snow shoes. We spotted lots of Arctic animals such as the Arctic fox, snow hares, polar bears and sea lions.
This is us on our Arctic adventure.
However, some of us got a little chilly on our imaginary Arctic adventure and had to have imaginary cups of hot chocolate to warm up!

What clothes do you think we should wear on
 our next Arctic adventure?

These are the clothes that one child though we should put on.
What do you think?

Arctic adventures

We have been using drama and role play in Year 1 to pack and get ready for imaginary expeditions to the Arctic to research polar bears.

This is a list of things that one child wants to take.

What would you say to this child?
What do you think of their list?
Would you take what they are?
What advice would you give them?
How could they improve their writing?

Polar Bears go Wild

It's all getting a bit chilly in Year 1...

An igloo has appeared in the conservatory, there's snow on the windows and polar bears have been spotted roaming in the Arctic tundra of the reading corners!

It seems we're almost ready for our outing to the Unicorn theatre next week to see Polar Bears go Wild.

We went on a polar bear hunt

We have had a fabulous week of learning
in Year 1; what a start to 2015

We have been learning about addition. Adding icebergs, seals and fish in numeracy, can you spot the theme?

We have started to become Arctic explorers investigating the mysterious ways of the polar bear. But the highlight of this week was visiting the natural history museum to see their stuffed polar bear "in real life".

Everyone was brilliant at becoming museum experts engaging in the adventure we went on and really enjoying the experience. Here are some pictures of our trip.

Can you write a recount of what we did on our trip?

Trip tomorrow

Tomorrow we're going on our first trip of 2015 to the Natural History Museum. We're going to be Arctic explorers to find Arctic animals in the mammal galleries.
Have an explore of their website;

What animals do you want to find at the museum?
How would you like to travel to the museum? Why?
What are you most looking forward to?

Welcome back!

Happy New Year! We hope you had a great holiday.

This term our topic is Arctic Explorers. We will be working with the Unicorn theater to do lots of learning based around the play "Polar Bears go Wild". We will be looking at polar bears and their arctic habitat. We will also be learning explorers this half term as we work on becoming reflective, self-regulated learners.

What do you know about polar bears already?
