Catch that Goat!

What a lovely start to the last week of term. Today we went on the P4 bus to the Horniman Museum to visit their two resident goats.
Visiting the goat at the Horniman Museum's animal walk

We compared the Horniman's goats to Ayoka's pet goat in the book we have been reading this term Catch that Goat. We also visited the natural history gallery to sketch different animals.

Before finally becoming nature explorers in the nature base. Where we discovered how to find and identify wildlife living in and around our city.  I particularly liked seeing inside the bee hives!

What was your favourite part of the trip?
What landmarks did you spot from the Horniman view point?
How did you play the different musical instruments?
Did you prefer travelling by bus or underground on our trips

What's our topic?

What do you think our new topic next half term is going to be?

I'll give you a clue; we're going to be basing all our learning on one truly amazing animal!

Peer Reading

We love Friday afternoons in Year 1 because every week some of the Year 3 children come and read with us. They are expert readers and help us with the tricky words and make us feel good about our reading skills.
Reading together

After they have read with us we talk about the book and discuss what we like. So far our favourite book has been We're going on a Bear Hunt by Michael Rosen.

Here is a video of Michael Rosen performing We're going on a Bear HuntEnjoy!

Nigerian Cooking

This week we have been learning how to write good instructions. Today we followed instructions to make some jollof rice with some of our parents who are from Nigeria. Tomorrow we are going to write our own recipe so we can make delicious jollof rice whenever we want.

Use the pictures below to give your parents instructions on how to make their own jollof rice…remember to use time connectives

British Museum

Our adventure to the African gallery at the British Museum was brilliant! We learnt so much about Africa and looked at lots of Nigerian artifacts.

Some of our favourite things were
"The ladies dress"
"Going on the escalator"
"The Nigerian shield that looked like a surf board"
"I liked the sculpture, it's a way of making art"

Assembly books

One of my favourite books is Crazy Hair.
I really enjoy reading it aloud and I love the illustrations. I like that the main character Bonnie makes up her own mind and enjoys an adventure. I would definitely choose this book to be read aloud in assembly.
What book would you like to have read out in assembly?

Money in my purse

Miss Wooldridge has eight coins in her purse.

She takes out three coins.
What are all the different amounts Miss Wooldridge could take out of her purse?

This place is awsome

What an amazing place the Victoria and Albert museum is! After we had crossed London by tube we had a cracking time looking at and learning about how Nigerian pottery is made.

What was your favourite bit about our trip?

Goat adventures

Wow! What a book. We've got to the end of Catch that Goat in Year 1 and now we're brimming with questions!

How else do you think the story could have ended?

Where else could the goat have gone?

What would have happened if they couldn't find the goat?

Ritzy Writing

What a fantastic trip to the Ritzy we had on Thursday. After our tour of the building we got to go into Screen One. Where there is an ornate barrel ceiling that really impressed us.  We had a private screening of Box Trolls and were all giggling into our popcorn!

Today, back at school, we have done some superb writing about our adventure.

What do you think?

Year 1 Trip

Year 1 are all very excited because we are going to the Ritzy again. This Thursday we're going on a trip to the Ritzy cinema to see Box Trolls and have a tour of the building. We'll even be counting all the chairs in the auditorium and looking for 2D and 3D shapes.

Please speak to a Year 1 teacher if you are interested in coming with us as a helper as we have lots of free adult tickets.

3D Mapping

Using google maps to explore Coldharbour Lane
Arranging buildings on our 3D maps of Coldharbour Lane

We used photos of the buildings on Coldharbour Lane to create 3D maps of the route from school to the Ritzy. Using googlemaps we checked that we had all the building in the right order.

What would you like to do with our 3D maps next?

What do you know about ColdHarbour Lane?

We have been looking at lots of maps of Brixton and the local area. Using the computers in the ICT room we mastered google maps to explore Brixton. We even used street view to have a tour inside our favourite building: the Ritzy!
Do you know any buildings that are on Coldharbour Lane?
What buildings did we pass when we walked to the Ritzy?
